Visa Application

Documentation to accompany a visa application.

Important: The information contained in this document aims to answer some common questions. It is intended as a guideline only and does not limit the discretion of the Visa Officer in dealing with individual applications.

Note: Copies of documentation must be clear, legible and in English. Documents of poor quality or damaged documents, which may make them unreadable, will result in your application being refused. If the necessary documents are not presented with the Visa application, the application will be deemed to be incomplete and subsequently refused by the Visa Officer.

The onus is on the visa applicant to satisfy the Visa Officer that a visa should be granted. It is up to you to supply the information to help the Visa Officer decide that you should be given a visa.

The following are the minimum, which you should give with your application.

Visit / Holiday

  • Confirmation of hotel booking or letter from reference in Ireland undertaking to provide you with accommodation during your stay;
  • A detailed account as to how the reference met you (where applicable);
  • A full copy of the passport of the reference may verify when and where the reference met you;
  • Evidence that you have sufficient funds to maintain yourself during your stay (recent bank statement covering a six months period) or evidence from your reference in Ireland undertaking to support you financially during your stay;
  • Evidence of obligations to return to your country of permanent residence following this visit, e.g.
    - letter from employer/college showing your current employment situation and the date you are expected to return to that employment/college,
    - details of family members residing in your country of permanent residence,
    - details of your accommodation in your county of permanent residence, e.g. ownership details or rental agreement
  • If visiting another EU member state prior to travelling to Ireland, the relevant visa for that country should be obtained before a visa for Ireland can be issued;
  • If travelling to visit a non EU national resident in the State, details of non EU national’s permission to remain in this State should be submitted (e.g Garda (Police) Registration Card).

Business / Conference

  • A letter of innovation from the Irish company giving contact details and stating the reason for, and duration of your proposed visit and showing responsibility for your accommodation and maintenance costs during your stay; or
  • A letter from conference hosts setting out details including nature, duration and program of conference and showing responsibility for your accommodation and maintenance costs during your stay.
  • Evidence of your obligations to return to your country of permanent residence, e.g. letter from employer showing your current employment situation and the date you are expected to return to that employment/college/family commitments.

Employment (including public performances)

  • A valid work permit; or
  • Written confirmation from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment that a work permit will issue, or is not required; and
  • Schedule of dates of performances (performing artists)

Join Parent / Spouse

  • A clear copy of spouse’s/ parent’s current work permit, Garda (Police ) Registration Card and passport;
  • Accommodation details;
  • Current payslips and P60 (Revenue Tax Form)
  • Evidence that the spouse/parent has sufficient funds to support you and other family members, (copies of recent bank statement, current payslips or other financial documents to support this application will be acceptable);
  • A Marriage and Birth Certificate for each dependent minor with (where appropriate) a notarised English translation.

Where a child is travelling alone / unaccompanied, a legal consent from the child’s other parent/guardian in his/her home country.

Family Reunification (for recognized Refugees)

  • A confirmation letter from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform showing the status of the family in Ireland. Applications under this scheme may take several months to investigate.

Medical Treatment

Note: - Visas are granted at the discretion of the Visa Officer and a visa application for medical treatment will only be considered where the applicant can show that they will attend a private hospital and will meet all costs from their private funds.

  • A detailed letter from a hospital/doctor in own country confirming the diagnosis and prognosis of the condition;
  • A letter from the private hospital/doctor in Ireland confirming that an appointment has been arranged and an indication of how long the treatment/recovery will take (i.e. how long you expect to be in Ireland);
  • Evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover the full costs of the private medical treatment and accommodation without recourse to public fund;
  • Details of any members residing in Ireland or the United Kingdom.

Training

  • A letter from your employer stating the reasons for, and duration of the Training.
  • A letter of invitation from the Irish Company stating the reason for and duration of proposed training and showing responsibility for your accommodation and maintenance costs during your stay if applicable;
  • Clear evidence of obligations to return to your country of permanent residence, e.g. letter from employer showing your current employment situation and the date you expected to return to that employment/college.

Exam

  • A letter of registration from college/school verifying the dates and nature of the examination;
  • Evidence that the requisite fees have been paid in full, official receipt;
  • Qualification certificates;
  • Clear evidence that you have sufficient funds to maintain yourself during your stay. Clear copies of recent bank statement, current payslips or other financial documents to support this application may be acceptable;
  • Clear evidence of obligations in your country of permanent residence, e.g. letter from employer showing your current employment situation and the date you are expected to return to that employment/college.

Fully Registered Doctor

  • You must submit your current work permit and full Medical Council Registration Certificate.

Temporary Registered Doctor

  • You must submit your Medical Council Registration Book with current registration; and
  • Letter from employer specifying details of current employment contract.

Spouse of Irish/EU Citizen

  • Passport or other proof of Irish/EU Citizenship of spouse; and
  • Marriage Certificate with (where appropriate) a notarised English translation;
  • The EU spouse’s birth certificate must also be presented in cases of discrepancy between the passport and marriage certificate;
  • A detailed account as to how the Irish/EU citizen met the applicant;
  • Evidence that the Irish/EU Citizen has sufficient funds to maintain his/her spouse;
  • Letter from Irish/EU Citizen’s current employment contract;
  • Details of the Irish/EU Citizen’s accommodation in the State;
  • Details of non-EU nationals immigration status in EU country if exercising EU Treaty Rights.

Business Permission

  • If you intend to come to Ireland in order to establish a business you will require the permission of the Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform to do so. A visa application will not be considered until such Business Permission has been granted.

Study Visa (please also refer to Student Visa Guidelines on service number 5030)

You must submit the following with your visa application:-

  • A letter of registration from the school / college in Ireland confirming the nature and duration of the course to be studied;
  • Clear evidence that the tuition fees have been paid and that you have sufficient funds to maintain yourself while in the State, including your medical insurance (This Letter of Acceptance may contain details of the insurance cover taken out on behalf of each student by the host school, college, university or other educational institution on behalf of the student);
  • Evidence as to how you will support yourself while in the State. This should be in the form of a recent bank statement; either the applicant or an immediate family member can submit this;
  • Details of your accommodation in the State;
  • If you will be supported by a scholarship, full details of this funding;
  • A detailed CV confirming any previous employment and full study details, including educational qualifications to date;
  • If you are a student in your home country, a letter from your school / college confirming all details of your course and attendance record;
  • If you are in employment a letter from your employer confirming all details of employment including the position held, wages, (a payslip) and whether the post is being held open for you on your return from study;
  • The relevance of the course you wish to study your current employment if employed;
  • Why you wish to study in Ireland;
  • Evidence that you have a sufficient level of English to fully undertake the course;
  • Contact phone numbers and addresses for all your references;
  • Details of any family members who are currently in this State;
  • If you hold residency in another EU Member State you must provide evidence.
